The performance of solvent-based adhesives is determined by the specific polymer formulation of the adhesive. To be effective, the joined materials fuse together as the polymer solvent quickly evaporates, making this an effective glue for fast-paced industries.
When to use Solvent-Based Adhesives
Many solvent-based adhesives are flammable and, as a result, are effective in joining rubber and plastics together because the high heat content is necessary to create flexibility and cohesion with rubber and plastics. Acrylics are a popular type of adhesive in this category and are used frequently in the automotive industry for paints and coatings. Other applications that may require solvent-based adhesives are woodworking, furniture manufacturing, and PVC piping and sheeting.
There are several advantages to working with solvent-based adhesives in fast-paced industries because they have a short fixing time, substantially decreasing the amount of time waiting for an application to set. Luckily, some solvent-based adhesives are not flammable, so you can still find an effective, fast setting adhesive even if you are working in a flammable environment such as a kitchen or garage.

RH 109 is a heat resistant, brush grade adhesive that gives excellent adhesion to natural, neoprene, nitrile, and butyl rubbers. RH 109 can be used by itself or in conjunction with 5% (by weight) of C 506 hardener. High heat resistance, economical, wide range adhesion, strong durable bonds, high tack and green strength. Good moisture and oil resistance.
Designed primarily as a contact cement for bonding a wide range of materials e.g.,leather, neoprene coated fabric, canvas, cork, felt, most rubber, fabrics, some plastics and synthetic materials. These materials are used in a wide variety of end use applications, such as exposure and diving suites, life raft, wading suits & air supported structure. RH-134 is also being used successfully to bond leather, fabrics, synthetics and many other materials used in the bag, belt and garment industry. RH-134 is specially formulated to provide good adhesion to a wide range of materials and exhibits easy brushing, fast drying and quick tack characteristic. This quality adhesive also displays good open time, excellent heat, moisture, oil resistance and cold temperature flexibility. The cured glue line remains tough yet flexible and yields strong, long lasting bonds
A high performance , fast tacking, solvent-neoprene based adhesive that exhibits high initial green strength and good to excellent heat resistance with superior cohesive strength upon dead load testing. Especially suited for rapid lamination and as a high performance adhesive, it is used for bonding leather, SBR, neoprene rubber stocks, metals, foils, foams, synthetic fabrics, synthetic rubbers, synthetic rubber foams, urethane foam, most plastics, and hard-to-adhere synthetic fabrics (such as hypalon & Kevlar). Contact bonding of foam to rubber and to metal, contact bonding of automotive trunk and door gaskets, attaching decorative plastic laminates to wood used to bond molded neoprene and SBR rubber stocks to themselves.
RAINBOW C252 is a polyurethane cement that develops extremely high bond strengths to a wide variety of materials such as leather, vinyl, pvc, urethanes, rubbers, acrylics, wood, and most man made synthetics. C252 can be used as a single part adhesive or in combination with catalyst RFE (5% RFE by weight), which increases heat & moisture resistance by 10 - 15%.
Designed primarily for bonding neoprene coated fabric to itself in the manufacture of inflatable life vests, life rafts, air supported structures, exposure suits, airships, wading suits, etc. Rainbow RH-149 is a high performance adhesive system which displays high initial green strength and extremely strong final bonds. The cured glue line is tough, flexible and exhibits good heat, moisture and oil resistance, as well as good low temperature flexibility and aging propertie
R 325 is a superior contact adhesive designed for industrial applications that is fast drying with excellent initial tack and long open time. It has excellent room temperature contact bonds, excellent green strength and high heat resistance. R-325 is fast drying with a long open time. The Higher viscosity insures good coverage with minimal soak in into porous substrates. Excellent bond adhesion to a variety of substrates including but not limited to DHPL, particleboard, rubber, plywood, steel, rigid plastics and rigid urethanes, etc.
RH 405 is a heat resistant, low viscosity, brush or spray grade single part cold curing adhesive with a built in cross linking vulcanizing system. It gives excellent adhesion to natural, neoprene, nitrile, butyl rubbers, hypalon, rigid PVC, many open & closed cell foams, metals, wood, and many other pourus and non-pourus materials. RH 405 high solids content enables rapid drying and economical coverage. It develops an aggressive tack with good delayed open time and high green strength. The resin reinforced rubber of RH 405 produces strong shock resistant bonds that are odorless, non-staining and resistant to moisture, oil and grease. Maximum physical and chemical properties are achieved after 2 - 3 days from time of bonding. RH 405 can be used where bond line temperatures may reach a maximum elevated temperature of 134EC (234E F). RH 405 possesses good non-phasing stability.
An adhesive made from elastic polymers (typically latex) mixed in a solvent such as acetone, hexane, heptane or toluene to keep them fluid enough to be used. Water-based formula, often stabilized by ammonia, are also available. This makes it part of the class of drying adhesives: as the solvents quickly evaporate, the "rubber" portion remains behind, forming a strong, yet flexible bond. Often a small percentage of alcohol is added to the mix. Rubber cement is simply a mixture of solid rubber in a volatile solvent that will dissolve it. When the cement is applied, the solvent evaporates, leaving the rubber as the adhesive. Almost any rubber (pre-vulcanized or not) can be used. The rubbers used might be natural rubber, gum mastic or gum arabic. Early solvents used included chloroform and benzene.
